Developed by Kwang Jo Choi, who was born in South Korea before emigrating to Canada in the early 1970s.The style relies more on flexibility and fluidity of movement as opposed to the more rigid lines of some other martial arts.

Choi Kwang Do claims to emphasize the use of biomechanics, and to employ a number of modern disciplines, such as kinesiology and psychology, in its design. The result is a tendency towards the use of natural body movements, and this serves to place less pressure on the joints. The style also incorporates breathing and stretching exercises from yoga.
Choi Kwang Do is not designed for competition, and training is non-contact.

Choi Kwang Do is one of the safest forms of martial arts training. Due to the fact that injuries generally occur when two people are sparring. Choi Kwang-Do has eliminated this practice in its training. Instead, drills are done using focus pads and air shields that allow the practitioner to develop his/her technique and power by hitting the target as hard as they want without hurting themselves or the holder.

This martial art is especially suited for people who's main concern is self-defense and cardiovascular fitness. It is suited for professional people because they do not have to worry about visible injuries interfering with their normal day to day lives.

The major benefits for kids are increased self-confidence, improved discipline and better self-respect. Kids classes are designed to be energetic, educational and most of all fun. Students are encouraged to train and improve themselves through positive support - not intimidation.

The major benefits for adults are increased endurance, increased flexibility, concentration and stress reduction. Choi Kwang-Do is taught according to individual needs and level of skill. You learn an effective means of self-defense. Another benefit is having a goal to work towards (first your black belt and then the higher degree black belt) keeps one motivated and energetic!
