Tegumi means "hand grapple" and was the term used to describe the hand-flow and grappling aspect of old-style karate. It  is a traditional form of wrestling from Okinawa emphasizing throws, trips, sweeps, joint locks, holds, traps, chokes and parries.

Tegumi evolved from a primitive form of grappling. It is arguably the original form of fighting in Okinawa and, as it was enhanced by striking and kicking techniques imported from China, became the progenitor of Te, which is the foundation of modern karate. There are many rules that ensure practitioners safety.Competitions are refereed and victory is decided by submission achieved through either a joint lock a stranglehold or hold-down pinning.
