we wish you every thing of the best in your new endeavour. | May | Senpai Andy's relocation
I joined the Mayfair West Dojo, and have trained under Shihan Solly since the beginning of 1999. I consider our dojo to be a home-from-home
and I have made many friends here. While the dojo has always had a good vibe about it, the spirit which flows through this place lately is nothing short of phenomenal! And it is not just confined to the senior
sessions or even the karate classes. Just enter the dojo during any class, Karate, Kickboxing, or even the Gym, and the positive energy almost knocks you right out of the door ' damn ' if we could bottle it and
sell it, it would be a runaway success! Seriously though, the atmosphere here is awesome!
Ken to fude no ryu Karate is a style in the making in the process of being forged into a truly effective Martial Arts system. We are in a state
of flux. I have been a part of the Martial Arts - in one form or another since 1973, and I can truly say that I have never experienced such positive spirit, or been exposed to such great opportunity for learning
Karate, as exists in our Dojo at this time. I have personally made significant progress in my ability to produce Karate technique, and I find the revised syllabus very stimulating indeed
Why am I telling you all this?I am relocating to Cape Town in June. As such, I won't have access to this Dojo on a regular basis. What I have so long taken for granted
will not be accessible. Yet Karate is part of my life part of what defines me. I will, in due course join one of our sister Dojos in Cape Town,
and continue to practice our art as faithfully as I can, and maybe in time we can open a Branch of Ken To Fude No Karate Ryu
in Cape Town this is my sincere wish!
Am I scared? Hell yes! But this move is something that I HAVE to do.
I will obviously maintain ties with Shihan Solly who has become so much more than just a Teacher to me! I would like to take this opportunity
to thank the people who had a hand in my advancement in this Art each and every person whom I interacted with and that would include each and every student here, in the sub-branches, and at
Goudpark Primary - School - thank you very much! Finally, we as Karate-Ka we owe so much to so many for the opportunity we have to train in such a great environment, in a fantastic Dojo,
with an excellent Head-Master! Mostly though, we owe it to ourselves to continue to take advantage of this positive situation, to enrich our own lives .Then we can give something back to the
art, and make our own positive contribution. This is Karate!
Keep training hard, and above all -
KEEP AN OPEN MIND!
ANDY BAKER - SENPAI

Gasshuku (Camp)
Approximately 70 students arrived at the Dojo very exited.
Some of these juniors have never been away from home on their own and they were so exited that they kept on asking when the bus is arriving.
When the bus finally arrived bags were packed and everyone was off to the camp site-at Klein Kariba - Botanika near Warmbaths. We trained under blue sky's and a hot sun, we had very cold nights and had all our
meals under a lapa. We enjoyed one afternoon at the pools - hot and cold, spoiled ourselves with ice cream and popcorn. The Gasshuku (camp) was very successful. Thank you to all those who attended,
especially the children who braved the cold nights and the first time away from home without mummy and daddy.
A Students view of the Camp-
(By Shan Govender)
I had never been on a karate camp before, so I was eagerly awaiting the arrival of the 12th May 2006 to start my experience.
The schedule seemed as though it was going to be tough, but I was nevertheless looking forward to tightening the slack, toughing the body, and polishing the spirit.
We arrived at the camp around 20h45. I was included in a group consisting of four adults and nine children. I must say it was very challenging keeping the
children under control.
The training that we had to undergo was basic, practical and informative. The katas were practiced and emphasis was placed on students producing clean techniques.
There was also focus on cleaning up of the execution of the latest changes to all kata movements. The execution of GekisaiDai Ichi, where one student was
attacking and the defending, demonstration of how important it was to execute kata was also explained in detail by Shihan, and invaluable knowledge was gained by all students.
The timing between training sessions was appropriate in order to allow students to also enjoy the camp by playing sport eg. Soccer and Cricket. The students were taken
to the warm pools at the resort on Saturday afternoon. Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon at the pools before heading off back to camp for another training session.
During the camp, especially during breakfast, lunch and supper times students and instructors freely mingled in order to know one another better. On Saturday evening students and
instructors gathered around a huge bonfire, and once again got the opportunity to mingle and discuss any issues.
More training sessions were given on Sunday and we thereafter departed from Klein Kariba at around 14h00 to head back home. There were many tired students who managed to take
a nap during the bus trip back home.
The camp was fantastic in that it provided a balance between serious training, knowledge transfer, learning about each other and also having some fun. I am most certainly looking forward
to the next camp.

( most unlike the Japanese masters that have rubbed shoulders with us in

flawless, and he put a fresh spin on some old concepts. The students came

Why do I do Karate
Do I do it to fight? No!
Do I do it to kick? No!
Do I do it to punch? No!
I do it for two reasons only.
1) For self defence and
2) Discipline
I love karate, because it is not a violent sport.
MEDITATION:
Shihan recently restarted the meditation classes. These classes
start at 19h15 and run until about 20h00.These meditation
classes are very strongly recommended if you are training in
the Martial Arts particularly if you are a serious student.
Meditation can be used to help get in touch with your deeper
self or spirit. It can lead to a deeper sense of SELF, increase
your awareness, and sharpen your response to all sorts of external
stimuli all of which translate to better understanding of and more
truthful execution of Technique.Regular meditation will assist in
focussing the mind, body and spirit in the direction which the
student wishes it to focu NOTE: Like anything worth having
meditation is a process. You cannot expect to have it all in three
easy lessons. Practice is the key. If you are prepared to attend
meditation class on a regular basis, and follow faithfully the
lessons taught, then it obviously follows that you will be rewarded
for your efforts the Universe works this way! Karate students should
take at least 2 meditation classes a month.

a good experience for our students.
A STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE OF THE TOURNAMENT
(By:- Jan-nita Wilken)
Eagles Karate Tournament, February 2006, started off with a very early
morning Osu greeting. When Ken To Fude No Karate Ryu Club was
announced to enter the hall, we all knew that this was going
to be a very long day. While waiting to participate, Ken To Fude Ryu
team kept it simple by observing participating competitors and
socializing. When at last, the time came for the team to perform,
encouraging words and support surrounded the team. Even though
obtaining experience was the main aim for the majority of the team,
we still made our mark and took home some medals. Hard and
tough training with the help of Shihan, Senseis Bradford and Razien.
Sempai Ronald and all the other black belts and seniors advice,
and our support structure, it was a very successful day. After a long
day and taking home a tired team, who learnt a lot, we are ready to
take on anybody who dares!
(By:- Amina Rangila)
Man, but do we have a diversified Dojo or what? I mean, we were lining
up outside the arena, waiting to be called upon to make our
entrance and we were very possibly the only Ryu there that had people
from all four of the main race groups as its constituents. Whoo Boy! I think we earned a few curious stares.
Then, as if that wasn't enough. When it was time to strut our stuff,
we did so with absolute finesse, sportsmanship and downright grit.
Displaying the art of karate in a way that we can be proud of.
We took more than a few medals, stunning even ourselves for
some reason. Were we concerned about being new to the inter style
tournaments? Well, if so, I think that we can rest assured, we have
definitely made an impact ,people have taken notice, our name
has been noted.
What I found completely amazing as I sat in the stands watching
our contestants, was the manner of the judges. To me they seemed
biased not that I don't have a certain bias of my own, mind you but this was the kind of thing that could be seen even through
inexperienced eyes. Perhaps it was the difference in our style of
fighting that could have contributed to my overall perspective.
Things that we would normally look for, like kake mawashi
(since we are oh! so fond of our kicks), seemed to almost go
unnoticed by the judges. People tend to choose that which
is known and in this case, we were the unknowns. But ,
I guess, fairness is relative, and people
would beg to differ.
From a spectators point of view, if you'd pardon the cliche,
I think that we surely gave them a run for their money. Our
contestants were strong, confident and certainly no pushovers.
We came back sporting more than just a few medals though.
We came back with experience, with ideas and with the
knowledge that we have gained ground in this new territory.
Me thinks we did great 'Well done guys!' With dexterous
participants and proficient Master, I guess all that's left to
say is: 'Make way people Ken Fude Ryu coming through!'
Television Appearance
At 6.30pm Shihan and a group of Students were featured on
Gem Games a SABC 1 programme.
19th We had a Junior Tournament at our Dojo. This went off very well and gave our
referees, judges and table administrators good practice. Congratulations to all
our 1st, 2nd and 3rd placing. Please remember that Winning does not necessary
make you a winner, just by taking part you are already a WINNER.
*A PARENTS PERSPECTIVE OF THE TOURNAMENT
(By:- Shahana Lorgat)
My son Yaseen, age 6, nagged to join karate training in 2003. Thinking that this
was another fad, I arranged for Solly Said to talk to Yaseen. Needless to say,
Yaseen being an impressionable 6 year old, had his eye on all the black belts
that walked by. I think he wanted to be a Power Ranger cum Ninja Turtle. Solly
and I had to explain to him that it takes years of dedication and hard work to
achieve a black belt.
As a mom, of course, I gave him the lecture about, I'm paying the fees'
and You better stick with it, even though I thought he would give it up after a
month. Well, three years later, under the expertise of Solly Said and his team,
Yaseen had progressed 'up the ranks'. However, there were many times that I
had to coerce him into going for lessons and deal with his nervousness when
it came to Kumite.
Shihan Solly over the past year transformed his school that is now called Ken
Fude Ryu. In doing so he endured a lot of questions about this change from
parents and students. On a sweltering Sunday, Ken Fude Ryu hosted its 1st
tournament following the World Karate Federation rules. I sat in the docks
and watched with pride as my son went through his kata.
Earlier parents were invited to a seminar which explained the rules judging
and point system in Kumite. Being a 'hands-on' mom, I decided to learn
more about Kumite and karate-do in general, I attended the seminar and
on tournament day assisted on the dojo floor. With the scoring of fights. Well,
I found it most interesting and exhilarating. Yaseen was encouraged to see
me take an active role in his sport. In addition, I had the opportunity to personally
interact with the individuals responsible for his discipline.
The tournament was met with lots of criticism and complaints. I found, after being
a part of the judging team, that to pull this off is easier said than done. As I'm
sure most parents will agree, the entire Ken Fude Ryu atmosphere assists in making
our children responsible, well -rounded individuals.
Many thanks to Shihan Solly and his karate community.
May you go from strength to strength. (I tried to translate this into Japanese, but wasn't
sure how to go about it on the computer I think there is a way to do it though)
*A STUDENTS PERSPECTIVE OF THE TOURNAMENT
(By:- Amina Rangila)
So we hosted a tournament for our juniors, and Man! The
excitement running rampant amongst the contestants was
utterly contagious. Little ones everywhere with parents giving
them last minute 'Don't be shy' and 'Be confident' tips.
Yip, sure enough, there was definitely nervous energy in there too.
First, it was line them up and jot down their names and from there
it was the floor. As an administrator, my attentionwas rather focused
on the ring that I was working but every now and then, on
change of contestants, I'd glance up and around, and the atmosphere
was alive; spectators cheering and voicing their approval or in certain cases disapproval.Yeah, so we have a few things that
can be improved upon, as things like time and participant name lists
became an issue. And with all due respect, some would say: Introduce
a more streamlined system. To which we'd surely give a Yeah on the
understanding though, that lifespan and efficiency of a system is dependent
on all it's interrelated components; one being, in this case, its participants,
for without them.Well, without them you have a sunset without the sun.
The problem experienced on this was with late entries being submitted,
which did in turn assist in throwing off a few schedules and although
I speak entirely under correction now, this was my perception.
However, issues aside. All in all I'd say we had great food, a superb
atmosphere and wonderful company. It was an awesome day.
Well done to all the Karateka who participated, and remember
'Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall'

8th Branch instructors meeting was held at Honbu. Syllabus was discussed in great dept
the details of which will be implemented as necessary. Note: Strong sharp Basic

teachers from Goudpark Primary were also present. Shihan Imtiaz and a few of his
students joined us, also present was Sensei Jerry Swart and Celeste Muller, former
students of Shihan Solly and long standing friends. First, we had a brisk training session
of about 30 minutes, then Shihan Solly set our goals and objectives for the year ahead.
- Train hard.
- Maintain a strong spirit.
Shihan Solly also gave a talk on the Daruma Daichi ( Doll )
The Daruma Daichi is fascinating. No matter how it falls, or how it is knocked about,
it always springs back into its original position - regaining its composure. The saying
goes: 'nana karobi ya oke' which basically means 'seven times down eight times up'
if you get knocked down you must always get up! This is not only in the physical sense but
in the metaphorical sense also. We all suffer some form of setbacks during our journey
through life. Some setbacks are serious and some are super our challenge is to face
those setbacks in a positive manner, and like the Daruma Daichi which symbolises this
positive spirit regain our balance, and maintain our composure.
